Why Diet Alone Is No Longer Enough for Quality Health:

Once upon a time, “quality food” meant enjoying a vibrant plate brimming with fresh, colourful ingredients. Yet despite seemingly having a perfect diet, our bodies often miss out on vital nutrients important for our well being. Especially since most supermarket foods today are heavily processed and laden with chemicals.

There are two big reasons for this:

1) Soils & Chemical Farming:

In the past, fruits, vegetables, herbs, grains and many other ingredients were rich in nutrients. However, today’s farming practices have taken a toll on our soils. Continuous planting without resting the soil depletes essential minerals, while harsh chemical sprays damage the soil’s natural biology. This makes it harder for plants to absorb the nutrients they need. As a result, even the freshest ingredients often contain far fewer vitamins than those our ancestors enjoyed.

2) How Our Food is Altered & How Our Bodies Absorb It:

While we may try to eat healthy, modern food production and our busy lifestyles can make it harder to get all the nutrients we need. Many people eat more highly processed foods than ever before. These foods are often high in added sugar, refined carbohydrates, unhealthy fats, (like canola, vegetable, or sunflower oil), and excess processed salt. 

In addition, stress, ageing, medical conditions, and digestive issues can hinder our bodies ability to break down food and absorb nutrients. So, even when we eat well, our bodies may not fully benefit from the nutrients available.

The Quality Supplement Bridge:

High quality supplements play an important role in filling nutritional gaps. They provide essential support to our bodies and mental health when our diet falls short or when digestive issues limit nutrient absorption from food.

My Personal Journey with Supplements:

Throughout my health journey, I made one costly mistake: trusting clever marketing instead of researching the quality of the supplements I was taking.

I was naive to the hype, believing all vitamins were created equal! Well, I was wrong. Expensive brands don’t always mean better supplements either. It was disheartening to realise I was adding stress to both my liver and my finances. Since switching to quality vitamins, I’ve gained more energy, a stronger immune system, and an overall sense of wellness that has truly transformed my life.

Supplement Quality:

In my previous article, What’s In Your Vitamins? The Raw Truth About Quality! I explored what to look for in high quality supplements. In this article, I’ll share my personal ‘Supplement Reference Guide’, which I’ve thoroughly researched for my own health journey. Please use your own judgement and consult an integrative health practitioner for personalised advice, as many general practitioners may not have specialised training in nutrition and high quality supplements.

Low and High Quality Supplements:

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA):

  • Less Bioavailable Form: The synthetic mixture known as ALA-S-ALA (sometimes called RS-ALA) contains both the inactive and active forms. Since the S-form is not an active form, it does not have the same health advantages as ALA.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: R-ALA is superior quality option. This form is more effective, stable, and easier for your body to absorb. It gives you a greater energy boost and offers superior antioxidant protection, as your body can use it immediately.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Antioxidant for blood sugar regulation, cellular energy, and nerve function. Your cells only recognise the R form, which is the only type present in nature. It is well known for its antioxidant properties and is essential to energy metabolism.

Calcium

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Calcium Carbonate (essentially chalk, which requires high stomach acid to break down, is poorly absorbed, and can cause constipation).
  • Active Bioavailable Forms: Calcium Citrate, Calcium Malate, or MCHC (Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite).
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Crucial for bone density, muscle function, and nerve signalling. Citrate and malate forms do not rely heavily on stomach acid to dissolve, making them much easier on the digestive tract. Always ensure you pair calcium with vitamins D3 and K2 to guide it safely into the bones rather than the arteries.

Chromium:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Chromium chloride is considered a lower grade form of chromium. This makes it more difficult for the body to absorb.  
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Chromium picolinate and chromium polynicotinate are regarded as higher quality forms. The body can use these forms more easily, leading to better health outcomes.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Maintains blood sugar levels and enhances insulin sensitivity. This is important for energy levels and general metabolic health. It also helps the body metabolise carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins more efficiently.

Coenzyme Q10:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Ubiquinone is the less bioavailable form of Q10.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Ubiquinol is the active form of Q10 and is more easily absorbed.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: One of the main roles of CoQ10, especially in its active form, is to help produce cellular energy (ATP). This also supports our heart health, making it an important nutrient for overall well being.

Copper:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Cupric oxide is the less bioavailable form of copper.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Copper bisglycinate and copper sebacate are the more easily absorbed active forms.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Copper is essential for iron metabolism, collagen formation, and energy production. It is often taken to help maintain balance when supplementing with high doses of zinc.

Glucosamine

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Glucosamine sulphate (sulfate) sodium chloride is significantly mixed with low quality table salt.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Glucosamine sulphate (sulfate), potassium chloride and glucosamine HCl are the more easily absorbed active forms.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Supports cartilage repair and joint lubrication. High quality forms provide pure glucosamine.

Glutathione:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Standard oral L-glutathione is broken down by stomach acid before reaching cells.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Liposomal Glutathione or S-Acetyl-L-Glutathione Powder.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: The body’s main antioxidant and detoxifier for the liver can be found in liposomal or acetylated forms, which are designed to survive digestion and boost cellular levels effectively.

Inositol

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Inositol hexanicotinate is often referred to as “no-flush vitamin B3” or niacin. However, it’s important to note that it doesn’t deliver the actual benefits associated with inositol.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Myo-inositol in its pure form or a blend of myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol in a 40:1 ratio are optimal choices. The pure form is often favoured for its direct effects. While the blend is said to provide a balanced approach that enhances overall benefits.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: This nutrient is essential for mastering cellular signalling, as it helps maintain a balance of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which can lead to a calmer mood. It also enhances insulin sensitivity and promotes overall ovarian and hormone health.

Iodine:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Synthetic Potassium Iodate (commonly used in cheap refined table salt fortifications).
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Potassium Iodide or natural, wild-harvested kelp/seaweed extracts.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Essential for thyroid health and the production of metabolic hormones. Sourcing it from high-quality natural kelp ensures your body gets iodine alongside the companion trace minerals required for balanced, natural absorption.

Iron – (Only take if deficient)

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Ferrous sulphate (sulfate) is known to be coarse on the stomach and often causes constipation.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Ferrous bisglycinate (chelated) or iron polysaccharide complex.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Iron is essential for making red blood cells and carrying oxygen throughout the body. The bisglycinate version is particularly easy for the body to absorb and is much easier on the stomach.

Magnesium:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Magnesium oxide is not well absorbed by the body and primarily functions as a laxative.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Magnesium glycinate, malate, threonate, or citrate.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Glycinate is known for its calming effects, helping with sleep and reducing anxiety. Malate supports muscle function and boosts energy levels, making it great for physical activity. Threonate is beneficial for brain health and enhances cognitive abilities, while citrate aids digestion and promotes a healthy gut.

Manganese:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Manganese sulphate (sulfate) or oxide.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Manganese bisglycinate or manganese citrate.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Bone formation, blood clotting, and the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids are all supported by the active forms.

Molybdenum:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Sodium molybdate.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Molybdenum glycinate.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Vital for supporting sulphite (sulfite) oxidase, an important enzyme that helps the body break down harmful sulphites. It helps remove waste, ensuring our bodies stay healthy and function properly.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane):

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Forms containing added substances such as heavy metals, anticaking agents, or synthetic contaminants.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: 100% dimethyl sulfone. High quality go to brands include OptiMSM, Solgar, or Henry Blooms.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: An excellent source of organic Sulphur (Sulfur) that our bodies can easily absorb. It is essential for making collagen, which helps keep our joints moving smoothly, lowers inflammation, and supports strong hair, skin, and nails.

Prebiotics:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Standard inulin or fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are typically sourced from a cheap form of chicory root.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: GOS (Galactooligosaccharides), XOS (Xylooligosaccharides), or PHGG (Partially Hydrolysed/Hydrolyzed Guar Gum).
  • Key Benefits & Notes: The active forms promote the development of beneficial gut bacteria and boost the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Quality forms of this substance ferment slowly, making them very gentle for those with sensitive stomachs.

Probiotics:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Standard unencapsulated strains often struggle to survive the harsh environment of stomach acid, leading to a high mortality rate.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Soil based, spore forming strains (which naturally survive longer) or strains delivered in Delayed Release (DRcap) capsules designed to bypass stomach acid.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Helps keep our microbiome healthy and boosts the immune system. It is best to choose probiotic strains such as Bacillus coagulans or Bacillus subtilis. These strains are uniquely equipped to survive stomach acid and thrive in the gut.

Omega 3 (Fish Oil):

  • Less Bioavailable Form: The Ethyl Ester (EE) form is a synthetic version that takes longer for the body to absorb and can cause unpleasant fishy burps.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Triglyceride (TG) form.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Fish oil supports the health of the brain, joints, heart, and skin. The natural triglyceride form found in fish absorbs significantly better, up to 70% more effectively than ethyl esters.

Selenium:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Sodium selenite.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Selenomethionine or Selenium enriched yeast.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: A powerful antioxidant that helps convert the thyroid hormone T4 into its active T3 form. It also aids in DNA synthesis and protects cells against oxidative damage.

Therapeutic & Mineral Salts:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Standard refined table salt, are heavily processed to remove trace minerals, bleached extensively, and often contains aluminium based anti-caking agents.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Celtic Sea Salt, Himalayan Pink Salt or Redmond Real Salt.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Excellent sources of essential trace minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium, along side unrefined sodium. Celtic sea salt particularly stands out as an exceptional electrolyte balancer that aids deep cellular hydration.

Vitamin A:

  • Less Bioavailable Forms: Retinyl Palmitate and Retinyl Acetate.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Retinol (active, derived from animals) vs beta-carotene (plant precursor).
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Help support vision, immune system, and skin health. Active retinol is ready for the body to use; beta-carotene needs to be converted.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine):

  • Less Bioavailable Forms: Thiamine Hydrochloride and Thiamine Mononitrate
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Benfotiamine (a fat-soluble and highly bioavailable form of Thiamine) or Thiamine Pyrophosphate (TPP)
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Significant for energy metabolism and nervous system support. Benfotiamine can enter cells more easily than regular vitamin B1.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin):

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Riboflavin.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Riboflavin-5-Phosphate.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Supports cellular energy production, metabolism, and vision. The “5-phosphate” form is the biologically active coenzyme.

Vitamin B6:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Pyridoxine HCl.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P-5-P).
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Active form; helps with the formation of neurotransmitters (serotonin and dopamine), as well as cardiovascular health and hormonal balance.

Vitamin B9 (Folate):

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Folic acid.
  • Active Bioavailable Forms: L-Methylfolate (5-MTHF) or Folinic Acid.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Essential for cell division, DNA development, repair, and synthesis. Also beneficial for the brain and cardiovascular health. Choosing the methylated active form is especially important for those with the common MTHFR gene mutation, who cannot properly convert synthetic folic acid.

Vitamin B12:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Cyanocobalamin (contains a cyanide molecule), which is harder for the body to convert into an active form.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Methylcobalamin or adenosylcobalamin.
  • Key Benefits & Notes:  It helps the body convert food into energy, supports the nervous system, aids red blood cell production, and enables important processes like methylation, which is essential for regulating genes and maintaining overall health.

Vitamin C:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Synthetic Ascorbic Acid (highly acidic and can cause digestive upset in larger doses).
  • Active Bioavailable Forms: Liposomal vitamin C or buffered mineral forms, sodium ascorbate and calcium ascorbate.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: A powerful antioxidant essential for immune defence, collagen production, and deep tissue repair. Liposomal and buffered versions are designed to be much gentler on the stomach while significantly increasing cellular absorption.

Vitamin D:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol, which is plant-derived; however, it is less efficiently utilised by the human body).
  • Active Bioavailable Form: D (cholecalciferol)
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Vitamin D3 is far more effective at raising and maintaining optimal vitamin D levels. It is essential for robust immunity, bone density, and mood regulation.

Vitamin E:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol (always look for the “l” on the label, which indicates a synthetic, less bioavailable chemical structure).
  • Active Bioavailable Form: Natural d-alpha-tocopherol, or a blend of mixed tocopherols & tocotrienols.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Acts as a powerful fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidative damage. Choosing a full spectrum mix of tocopherols and tocotrienols mirrors how vitamin E is found in nature, allowing the different forms to work together effectively.

Vitamin K2:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: MK-4 (menaquinone-4), which has a very short half life in the body.
  • Active Bioavailable Form: MK-7 (menaquinone-7, ideally the highly stable trans-form).
  • Key Benefits & Notes: This active form plays a vital role in directing calcium away from your arteries and into your bones and teeth. This helps to prevent dangerous arterial calcification. While MK-4 disappears from the bloodstream within hours, MK-7 stays active and circulating for days. Pair this with vitamin D3 for best health results.

Zinc:

  • Less Bioavailable Form: Zinc oxide and zinc sulphate (sulfate).
  • Active Bioavailable Forms: Zinc picolinate, bisglycinate, or monomethionine.
  • Key Benefits & Notes: Highly absorbable active forms support immune defence, skin healing, hormonal balance, and cellular repair without triggering the nausea often associated with cheaper forms.

Navigating the supplement aisles can feel completely overwhelming. However, remember that your health deserves quality over convenience. Knowing the distinction between synthetic ingredients that are hard to absorb and those that are effective can help you make better choices when shopping for your supplements.
